Choosing the correct size fan is vital for effective ventilation.
You want to select the largest capacity fan available without causing draughts. As a general rule, 100mm fans suit toilets or laundries, 120mm fans suit small bathrooms and shower cubicles and 150mm fans are most effective in large bathrooms or kitchens. Sometimes, in very large rooms you will need a combination of extraction fans, or a fan and rangehood.
Another important factor in selecting your fan is replacement air. Generally the space between the floor and bottom of the door is adequate for most applications, including bathrooms and toilets. However high pressure applications and tightly sealed rooms may require supplementary replacement air.
To determine the best size fan for your needs follow the calculation below:
Calculate the Room Volume in Metres:
Multipy:
Length x Width x Height = Room m3
Calculate Required Performance:
Multiply the room volume by the number of required air changes. Eight to ten air changes per hour is a good starting point, or view a more detailed table below.
Select Your Fan:
Select a fan with a performance rating at least 20 percent more than what you have calculated. It is better to choose a fan with a higher rating than have inadequate ventilation.
Example:
A domestic kitchen 2.0m x 2.5m x 2.4m = 12.0m3
Recommended air changes for a domestic kitchen = 10 - 15
So Multiply 12.0 x 15 = 180m3/h
Add 20% = 216m3/h
Suggested fans:
GX Series - 266m3/h
DX400 - 245m3/h
